I just finished college. Now I get to write in short sentences. And short paragraphs.
Why? No professors to please with offerings of semicolons and page-long paragraphs. No need to speak one way and write another.
I'll do my best to relax my writing. That'll serve me well in the field I intend to pursue: radio journalism. The ear has a shorter attention span than the eye.
However, I will not—under any circumstances—give up the em dash. I'm not even sure I'm using it right when I use it. But it's my favorite piece of punctuation, so I'm going to keep on using it—'til the day I die.
